During one amazing week in Lithuania, I visited three beautiful lakes: Žalieji, Ilgis, and of course – Galvė. Trakai truly feels like the kingdom of lakes!Lake Galvė is not only one of the most scenic in Lithuania but also one of the deepest. It’s home to 21 islands – a truly magical landscape. Interestingly, the name Galvė likely comes from the Lithuanian word for head (galva). According to ancient legends, human heads were once thrown into the lake…
Possibly pagan sacrifices? Or maybe a grim warning to enemies? In 1923, two fake heads were found there – perhaps real ones replaced over time?
Together with my friends, we walked around the main part of the lake, circling the iconic Trakai Island Castle. It was a scorching summer day – +30°C, but we did over 11,000 steps and didn’t even feel tired. Thank goodness for the comfy sneakers from my daughter’s collection!
The lake was full of life – birds, boats, and tourists from all over the world. We heard English, German, and French, met visitors from Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, and Belarus. Lots of students and Vilnius locals too – and it’s no wonder, as the Vilnius–Trakai train runs regularly and conveniently. Trakai is always full of action: boating, amber and souvenir shopping, and of course – tasting the legendary kibinai!
For me, Trakai is a tradition. I return every time I’m in Lithuania – no matter the season. Lake Galvė and the castle always have their charm. A magical place, perfect for long walks or friendly meet-ups.
Highly recommended for foreign visitors – don’t miss one of Lithuania’s true gems: Trakai Island Castle.
