The Municipality of Plovdiv, the second largest city of Bulgaria and none other than the ancient Philippopolis, recently extended its hospitality to a group of journalists from European Fijet organizations, including Cyprus. 
The three-day programme involved sight – seeing of the impressive antiquities of the city, the picturesque streets of the old quarter lined with traditional mansions and culinary delights with both local food and wine.

Astride on the Maritsa River, Plovdid boasts the title of Europe’s oldest inhabited city since the 6th millennia BCE, as part of the cradle of the ancient Thracians, culminating in the founding of Philippopolis by Alexander the Great’s father Philippos in the 4th century BC, followed by the Romans and henceforth remaining an important crossroads of peoples and civilizations. In its recent history it had been the capital of Eastern Rumelia, while its fate intersected with that of Cyprus at the Congress of Berlin in 1878. 
At a press conference at the Town Hall, housed in a majestic preserved building along with the Municipal Art Gallery, the Deputy Mayor for tourist and cultural affairs Plaven Panov unfolded the plans for the continuing growth of the city. Plovdiv was European Capital of Culture 2019, while it ranked high in all recent European tourist competitions including European best destination 2022.

Ο δήμος τoυ Πλόβντιβ, της δεύτερης μεγαλύτερης πόλης της Βουλγαρίας, που δεν είναι άλλη από την αρχαία Φιλιππούπολη, φιλοξένησε πρόσφατα ομάδα δημοσιογράφων από Ευρωπαϊκές FIJET, ανάμεσα στις οποίες και η Κύπρος. Το τριήμερο πράγραμμα περιλάμβανε ξεναγήσεις στις εντυπωσιακές αρχαιότητες της πόλης, στα γραφικά δρομάκια με τα παραδοσιακά αρχοντικά, και γευστικές απολαύσεις τόσο των εδεσμάτων όσο και των κρασιών της της περιοχής. 
Στη γιορτή της Αγίας Σοφίας οι εκκλησίες ήταν κατάμεστες από κόσμο.

Απλωμένο στις όχθες του μοταμού Μαρίτσα, το Πλόβντιβ διεκδικεί τον τίτλο της παλαιότερης κατοικημένης πόλης της Ευρώπης από την 6η π.Χ. χιλιετία, σαν μέρος του αρχαίου λίκνου των Θρακών, με κορύφωση την ίδρυση της Φιλιππούπολης από τον πατέρα του Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου τον 4ο π.Χ. αιώνα, την μετατροπή της αργότερα σε Ρωμαϊκή, και παραμένοντας έκτοτε σημαντικό γεωγραφικό σταυροδρόμι λαών και πολιτισμών. Στην πρόσφατη ιστορία της υπήρξε πρωτεύουσα της Ανατολικής Ρωμυλίας, ενώ η μοίρα της διασταυρώθηκε με αυτή της Κύπρου στο Συνέδριο του Βερολίνου το 1878. 
Το Πλόβντιβ ήταν Πολιτιστική Πρωτεύουσα της Ευρώπης 2019 ενώ έχει διακριθεί σε όλους τους πρόσφατους Ευρωπαϊκούς τουριστικούς διαγωνισμούς συμπεριλαμβανομένου του καλύτερου ευρωπαϊκου προορισμού 2022.

Ο Αντιδήμαρχος τουρισμού και πολιτισμού Πλάνεβ Πάνοφ μιλά στους δημοσιογράφους με φόντο πίνακες της δημοτικής πινακοθήκης. Σε δημοσιογραφική διάσκεψη στο δημαρχείο, που στεγάζεται σε επιβλητικό διατηρητέο κτίριο μαζί με την πλούσια δημοτική πινακοθήκη, ο Αντιδήμαρχος για τουριστικά και πολιτιστικά θέματα Πλάβεν Πάνοφ ανέπτυξε τα σχέδια της πόλης για συνέχιση της ανοδικής της πορείας.
