Bourtzi Castle is a magnet for tourists
At the entrance of the port of Nafplio at about 450m from the waterfront, there is the landmark of the city, Bourtzi, built on the island of Saints Theodoroi. Bourtzi Castle fascinates visitors from all over the world due to its beauty and its mystery.
Στην είσοδο του λιμανιού του Ναυπλίου σε απόσταση περίπου 450μ από τον μόλο, βρίσκεται το σήμα κατατεθέν της πόλης, το Μπούρτζι, χτισμένο στο νησί των Αγίων Θεοδώρων. Το Κάστρο Μπούρτζι γοητεύει επισκέπτες από όλο τον κόσμο λόγω της ομορφιάς και του μυστηρίου που εκπέμπει.
The fortress was built (1458-1481) by the Venetians and is a typical example of the Italian Renaissance military architecture, bearing all the defining features of a massive defensive structure, intended to repel invaders and to withstand siege.
Το φρούριο χτίστηκε (1458-1481) από τους Ενετούς και αποτελεί χαρακτηριστικό δείγμα της ιταλικής στρατιωτικής αρχιτεκτονικής της Αναγέννησης, με όλα τα καθοριστικά χαρακτηριστικά μιας τεράστιας αμυντικής δομής, που προορίζεται να απωθήσει τους εισβολείς και να αντέξει στην πολιορκία.
They built the castle as a means of controlling the area around them, as a base from which they could launch operations as well as protect themselves from enemies. The castle was erected to control the area and the important travel routes. The structure also served as centre of administration and symbol of power.
Το κάστρο χτίστηκε για έλεγχο της γύρω περιοχής και ως βάση απ’ όπου μπορούσαν να εκτελεστούν επιχειρήσεις, καθώς και για προστασία από εχθρούς. Επίσης χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως κέντρο διαχείρισης και σύμβολο ισχύος.
Bourtzi Castle a picturesque fortress on an islet attracts a wave of tourists like a magnet. Today it is one of the greatest tourist attractions of the city as an archeological museum.
Το Κάστρο Μπούρτζι ένα γραφικό φρούριο σε νησίδα προσελκύει κύμα τουριστών σαν μαγνήτης. Σήμερα αποτελεί ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα τουριστικά αξιοθέατα της πόλης ως αρχαιολογικό μουσείο.
The enchanting pictures that the view of Nafplio offers the visitors with the castle of Palamidi on the left and the fortress of Acronafplia on the right are indelible memories.
Οι μαγευτικές εικόνες που προσφέρει στους επισκέπτες η θέα του Ναυπλίου με το κάστρο του Παλαμηδίου στα αριστερά και το φρούριο της Ακροναυπλίας στα δεξιά είναι ανεξίτηλες αναμνήσεις.
In 1502, the Venetians, changed the fortifications on the southwest side into an independent rampart with ramparts, connected it with an artificial arm of boulders to which they attached a chain. The change which reached across to the city for protection.
Το 1715 το κάστρο έπεσε στα χέρια των Οθωμανών Τούρκων και από τότε τόσο το φρούριο όσο και το νησάκι είναι γνωστά με το τουρκικό τους όνομα Μπούρτζι. Οι Έλληνες ανέκτησαν το Φρούριο από τους Τούρκους στις 18 Ιουνίου 1822, από όπου βοήθησαν στην πολιορκία του Ναυπλίου. 
The castle was restored in the 1930s, and was transformed into a hotel with only 12 rooms and a restaurant. It operated continuously from the 1930s until 1970.
Το κάστρο αναστηλώθηκε τη δεκαετία του 1930 και μετατράπηκε σε ένα ξενοδοχείο με μόνο 12 δωμάτια και ένα εστιατόριο. Λειτουργούσε συνεχώς από τη δεκαετία του 1930 μέχρι το 1970.

Small boats head out to the fortress, leaving from the port fairly regularly. The trip lasts only a couple of minutes, and the view towards the city is at its best just before sunset.
Μικρά σκάφη κατευθύνονται προς το φρούριο, φεύγοντας από το λιμάνι τακτικά. Το ταξίδι διαρκεί μόνο μερικά λεπτά και η θέα προς την πόλη είναι στα καλύτερα της λίγο πριν τη δύση του ηλίου.
