In September 2024, a group of 69 Swedish UN soldiers – some of them with their close relatives, made a nostalgia trip to commemorate 50 years of Turkish Occupation of Northern Cyprus. The trip was partly of a nostalgic nature, visiting their old camp sites, and partly but not the least, the inauguration of the new Meeting Place at the Kapetanios Bay Hotel in Protaras, aimed at the many Scandinavian Veterans, who in these days visit often Cyprus as tourists.
The inauguration of “Check-Point Cyprus” took place in a ceremony on 13 September, 2024, when national television made a report. The event was also attended by the Swedish/Cypriot Association, https://www.svenskalag.se/svcyfor – by its president, former Famagusta resident Savvas Varnava and Famagusta mayor in exile; Dr Simos Ioannou.
These gentlemen gave heartfelt speeches and presentations, whereas Savvas Varnava (picture above) and his friends
Husein Akaskoy (picture above) and
Giorgios Liasi, (picture above) testified on their personal experiences during the 1974 invasion.
The event was generously hosted and organized by the hotel owner and manager Mavrikios Mavroudis, (picture above) at Kapetanios Bay Hotel.
The UN Veterans also visited Varosha (Famagusta) and Kyrenia, and ended their nostalgic trip in Larnaca at the RISE Hotel and were perfectly taken care of by its manager Olga Peppas (picture above).
A meeting was organised on the roof terrace where Swedish Ambassador Martin Hagström and the Deputy Mayor of Larnaca, Iasonas Iasonidis (picture above) gave speeches. Representatives of the Swedish Church in Aya Napa also participated and presented their activities, especially their services in Ayia Napa.
On this event, there was another TV-reporting by Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation CyBC (RIC).
The trip lasted for a fortnight and was perfectly organized by Göran Larsson, a Swedish PX-officer in the former UNFICYP battalions in Larnaca.

Welcome speech given by the mayor of Famagusta, Dr Simos Ioannou to the Swedish UNFICYP Veterans in Kapetanios Bay Hotel in Protaras September 13, 2024.
It is an honour to be here with you, the Swedish veterans of the United Nations Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus, people who have experienced our pain and suffering first-hand, the tragedy of the people of Famagusta, of the people of Cyprus. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the occupation of our city and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of UNFICYP.
Dear friends of Cyprus,
To be a refugee for half a century is a bitter identity to be marked with. Nobody chooses this destiny and we surely wish it to nobody in the turbulent times we are living in. It is cruel and heartbreaking to see Famagustians being buried as refugees, away from the land that gave birth to their ancestors, from the houses they took their first steps, from the neighbourhoods where they fell in love, where they dreamed of a future.
And the future they dreamed of seemed so bright. We were building a prized city. A city developed by the ambition, creativity and optimism of the hardworking ordinary people of Famagusta. We were an enthusiastic part of the rapid expansion of our town in the fields of tourism, industry, commerce and culture, sports and arts. Famagusta was thriving.
Some of you may have witnessed that era. Swedish tourists were a big part of the economic boom of Famagusta. Ironically and tragically, Famagusta became known to the Swedish public as a tourist destination, after the Swedish UNFICYP contingent was stationed in Famagusta.
But unfortunately, many of you have witnessed the ruins of that period of promise and optimism. Famagusta today is suffering from the consequences of this 50-year-old disaster. To add insult to injury, the Turkish occupation is now violating UN-resolutions about the fenced area of the city. The opening of the fenced area, the disregard for the resolutions of the UN Security Council on Famagusta and the relevant EU decisions indicate that peace has not been ensured in our country. This is what we mean when we say that the status quo is not sustainable.
Ankaras provocations aim at Famagusta because they know that as long as the possibility of a return to Famagusta remains viable, their aims of legitimizing and perpetuating the partition of the island will be in vain.
That is because Famagusta can be the key to the overall solution of the Cyprus problem, the point of consensus that will lead to a resumption of talks for a solution. Solution of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality as described in the UN resolutions. Our return to Famagusta will mean the return of peace, life and creativity, the return of an optimistic prospect for all, Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.
To this aim, we are sure that we will have our friends from Sweden by our side. You have devoted a lot of work; you have made sacrifices away from your families and you have put your lives in harm’s way to keep peace in the island. 17 Swedes have given their lives in Cyprus from 1964 to 1987. All these efforts for peace will not be in vain. Famagusta will become once again a place of peace and prosperity for all Cypriots and for all friends of Cyprus.

Det är en ära att vara här med er, de svenska veteranerna från FN:s fredsbevarande styrka på Cypern, människor som har upplevt vår smärta och vårt lidande på nära håll, tragedin för folket i Famagusta, för Cyperns folk. I år är det 50 år sedan vår stad ockuperades och 60 år sedan UNFICYP upprättades.
Kära vänner till Cypern,
Att vara flykting i ett halvt sekel är en bitter identitet att bli märkt med. Ingen väljer detta öde och vi önskar det sannerligen inte heller någon i den turbulenta tid vi lever i. Det är grymt och hjärtskärande att se Famagustabor begravas som flyktingar, borta från det land som födde deras förfäder, från de hus där de tog sina första steg, från de kvarter där de blev förälskade, där de drömde om en framtid.
Och den framtid de drömde om verkade så ljus. Vi höll på att bygga en värdefull stad. En stad som utvecklats tack vare ambitionen, kreativiteten och optimismen hos de hårt arbetande vanliga människorna i Famagusta. Vi var en entusiastisk del av den snabba expansionen av vår stad inom turism, industri, handel och kultur, sport och konst. Famagusta var blomstrande.
Några av er kanske har bevittnat den eran. Svenska turister var en stor del av Famagustas ekonomiska boom. Ironiskt och tragiskt nog blev Famagusta känt för den svenska allmänheten som ett turistmål efter att den svenska UNFICYP-kontingenten stationerats i Famagusta.
Men tyvärr har många av er bevittnat ruinerna av denna period av löften och optimism. Famagusta lider i dag av följderna av denna 50 år gamla katastrof. Till råga på allt bryter den turkiska ockupationsmakten nu mot FN:s resolutioner om det inhägnade området i staden. Öppnandet av det inhägnade området, åsidosättandet av FN:s säkerhetsråds resolutioner om Famagusta och de relevanta EU-besluten visar att freden inte har säkrats i vårt land. Det är detta vi menar när vi säger att status quo inte är hållbart.
Ankaras provokationer riktar sig mot Famagusta eftersom de vet att så länge möjligheten att återvända till Famagusta är livskraftig kommer deras mål att legitimera och vidmakthålla delningen av ön att vara förgäves.
Det beror på att Famagusta kan vara nyckeln till den övergripande lösningen på Cypernproblemet, den konsensuspunkt som kommer att leda till ett återupptagande av samtalen om en lösning. En lösning som innebär en bizonal, bikommunal federation med politisk jämlikhet i enlighet med FN:s resolutioner. Vår återkomst till Famagusta kommer att innebära en återkomst till fred, liv och kreativitet, en återkomst till optimistiska framtidsutsikter för alla, turkcyprioter och grekcyprioter.
För att uppnå detta mål är vi säkra på att vi kommer att ha våra vänner från Sverige vid vår sida. Ni har lagt ner mycket arbete, ni har gjort uppoffringar borta från era familjer och ni har riskerat era liv för att bevara freden på ön. 17 svenskar har gett sina liv på Cypern från 1964 till 1987. Alla dessa ansträngningar för fred kommer inte att vara förgäves. Famagusta kommer återigen att bli en plats för fred och välstånd för alla cyprioter och för alla Cyperns vänner.
