Η Δεσποτική Λίμνη, ο σημαντικός αυτός υγροβιότοπος Διεθνούς Σημασίας, βρίσκεται στη Χερσόνησο του Ακρωτηρίου, στο Αγρόκτημα του Αγίου Νικολάου. Αποτελεί ένα τεχνητό οικοσύστημα, το οποίο δημιουργήθηκε το 1960 για σκοπούς άρδευσης των καλλιεργειών της περιοχής.
The Despotic Lake, this important wetland of International Importance, is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula, in the Farm of Agios Nikolaos. It is an artificial ecosystem, which was created in 1960 for the purpose of irrigating the crops of the area.
Έχει έκταση ένα εκτάριο (10.000 m2) και βάθος περίπου 10 μ. Εμπλουτίζεται με γλυκό νερό από το φράγμα του ποταμού Κούρη. Σήμερα θεωρείται πλέον ως ένα πολύ σημαντικό οικοσύστημα, λόγω της συμβολής της στον εμπλουτισμό του υπόγειου υδροφορέα. Παρά το γεγονός ότι αποτελεί τεχνητή λίμνη, η βλάστηση γύρω της μετατρέπεται σταδιακά σε φυσική παρυδάτια βλάστηση.
It has an area of one hectare (10,000 m2) and a depth of about 10 m. It is enriched with fresh water from the dam of Kouri River. Ιt is now considered a very important ecosystem, due to its contribution to the enrichment of the underground aquifer. Despite the fact that it is an artificial lake, the vegetation around it is gradually turning into natural waterside vegetation.
Εκεί βρίσκουν τροφή και καταφύγιο πάνω από 50 είδη πουλιών, ενδημικά και αποδημητικά, εκ των οποίων τα 10 είναι προστατευόμενα. Οι λάτρεις των σπάνιων ειδών έχουν συμπεριλάβει τη λίμνη ανάμεσα στους προορισμούς τους και έρχονται ακόμα και από το εξωτερικό για να την εξερευνήσουν.
There they find food and shelter for more than 50 species of birds, endemic and migratory, of which 10 are protected. Lovers of rare species have included the lake among their destinations and even come from abroad to explore it.
