Larnaka Tourism Board (LTB) and the Youth Board of Cyprus (ONEK) have received an important international award for promoting Larnaka and Cyprus internationally with their joint project, the video ‘Ancient Port of Kition 3D Virtual Reconstruction’. The award was presented by the International Confederation ‘The Phoenicians’ Route of the Council of Europe’, and specifically, in the category ‘Innovative and creative enhancement of a cultural/archaeological site’.
Mrs Elena Tanou – President of the Phoenicians’ Route Confederation – accepted the award on behalf of the two local organisations at a ceremony held in Sicily, Italy. The award was then received in Cyprus by the presidents of LTB and ONEK, along with Larnaka’s Mayor, in a modest ceremony that took place on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at the Ancient Port of Kition archaeological site in central Larnaka.
It is important to note that this is the first time in Cyprus that ancient ruins have been virtually restored in 3D, and the award is the culmination of a series of joint initiatives between LTB and ONEK that concern digital upgrades of important monuments of the wider Larnaka region.
This particular project presents the 3D virtual restoration of the Ancient Port of Kition in five chronological phases: from 900 BC until 300 BC. A special software programme was used to combine historically accurate data from archaeological findings and studies of the French Archaeological Mission of Kition with virtual reality equipment, allowing viewers to see the ancient port and the surrounding area as it was 2,500 years ago in 3D format.
This ground-breaking and interactive experience transports viewers back in time, offering a previously unavailable opportunity to see the triremes (ancient vessels); the ship ramps and how vessels were towed on them; the sanctuary, and the workshops around the port. It is also significant that the finds unearthed at the archaeological site were integrated into the 3D video, allowing the user to see them in a 360° format and access information about them.
Also noteworthy is that the international distinction coincides with the resumption of excavations at the site of the ancient port by the French Archaeological Mission of Kition after a pause of many years, which will contribute to the gradual creation of the forthcoming Larnaka Archaeological Park.
During the award ceremony, LTB President, Mr Dinos Lefkaritis stated that this distinction honours both Larnaka and the island internationally, highlighting the modern way in which the rich history and culture of the region is presented. Mr. Lefkaritis expressed his thanks and appreciation to the President of the Confederation Ms Elena Tanou and the Director Dr. Antonio Barone for this honour.
ONEK President, Mr Kleanthis Koutsoftas, stated that the project in question – and this important award – are a tangible example of how technology can be used in collaboration with other scientific disciplines to offer innovative solutions and experiences; the essence of both ONEK’s goals and the role of its Youth Makerspace technology programme in Larnaka.
After congratulating all those involved and praising the excellent outcome of the project, Larnaka Mayor, Mr Andreas Vyras, noted that it is synergies such as this that lead to the creation of modern projects, attracting not only tourists, but also locals to Larnaka’s archaeological sites.
President of the Phoenicians’ Route confederation, Mrs Elena Tanou, added that she is proud of the cooperation developed between LTB and ONEK, and that their receipt of this unique award places Cyprus on the path of the Phoenicians.
During the modest ceremony, special mention was made to collaborators Sabine Fourrier, Andrea Lordos and Odysseas Kontovourkis, who all offered their consulting services on a non-profit basis, as well as to Dimitris Ktorides and Anastasia Kakkouris for their significant contribution, and to Mr Peter Ashdjian, who was among the inspirers of the project. Warm thanks were given to the Deputy Ministry of Tourism and Larnaka Municipality, to LCCI for their continued support, as well as to the Department of Antiquities for their valuable guidance.

Διεθνής βράβευση για την εικονική αναστήλωση του αρχαίου Λιμανιού του Κιτίου
Σημαντική διεθνή διάκριση που προβάλλει τη Λάρνακα και την Κύπρο διεθνώς έλαβαν η Εταιρεία Τουριστικής Ανάπτυξης & Προβολής Λάρνακας και ο Οργανισμός Νεολαίας Κύπρου για το κοινό τους έργο που αφορά στην τρισδιάστατη Εικονική Αναστήλωση του Αρχαίου Λιμανιού του Κιτίου (Ancient Port of Kition 3D Virtual Reconstruction). Το βραβείο απονεμήθηκε από τη Διεθνή Συνομοσπονδία “The Phoenicians’ Route” του Συμβουλίου της Ευρώπης και συγκεκριμένα στην κατηγορία “Innovative and creative enhancement of a cultural/archaeological site”.
Το βραβείο παρέλαβε στη Σικελία εκ μέρους των δύο Οργανισμών η Πρόεδρος της Συνομοσπονδίας The Phoenicians’ Route κα. Έλενα Τάνου, η οποία το παρέδωσε στους Προέδρους του ΟΝΕΚ και της ΕΤΑΠ Λάρνακας καθώς και στον Δήμαρχο Λάρνακας, σε σεμνή τελετή που πραγματοποιήθηκε την Τετάρτη 10 Νοεμβρίου 2021 στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο του Αρχαίου Λιμανιού του Κιτίου.
Είναι αξιοσημείωτο το γεγονός ότι για πρώτη φορά στην Κύπρο αρχαία ερείπια αναστηλώνονται εικονικά σε τρισδιάστατη μορφή. Η εν λόγω βράβευση αποτελεί το επιστέγασμα σειράς κοινών πρωτοβουλιών της ΕΤΑΠ Λ/κας και του ΟΝΕΚ που αφορούν ψηφιακές αναβαθμίσεις σημαντικών μνημείων της Περιφέρειας Λάρνακας. Το συγκεκριμένο έργο αφορά στην τρισδιάστατη εικονική αναστήλωση του αρχαίου λιμανιού του Κιτίου σε πέντε χρονολογικές φάσεις, από το 900 π.Χ. έως το 300 π.Χ.
Πρόκειται για μια καθ’ όλα διαδραστική και καινοτόμα εμπειρία η οποία μας ταξιδεύει πίσω στον χρόνο δίνοντας μας τη δυνατότητα να δούμε τις κεκλιμένες ράμπες και τη ρυμούλκηση των πλοίων πάνω σε αυτές, τις τριήρεις, το ιερό και τα εργαστήρια που βρίσκονταν γύρω από το λιμάνι.
Αξίζει να αναφερθεί ότι η διεθνής διάκριση χρονικά συμπίπτει με την επανέναρξη των ανασκαφών – μετά την πάροδο πολλών ετών – στον χώρο του αρχαίου λιμανιού, από τη γαλλική αρχαιολογική αποστολή, δίνοντας έτσι ουσιαστικά το έναυσμα για τη σταδιακή δημιουργία του νέου Αρχαιολογικού Πάρκου Λάρνακας.
Κατά την τελετή παράδοσης του βραβείου, ο Πρόεδρος της ΕΤΑΠ Λάρνακας κ. Ντίνος Λευκαρίτης δήλωσε ότι η εν λόγω διάκριση τιμά την πόλη και τη χώρα μας διεθνώς, αναδεικνύοντας τον σύγχρονο τρόπο με τον οποίο παρουσιάζουμε την πλούσια ιστορία και τον πολιτισμό μας. Ευχαρίστησε ακολούθως την Πρόεδρο της Συνομοσπονδίας κα. Έλενα Τάνου και τον Διευθυντή Δρ. Antonio Barone για την τιμή.
Ο Πρόεδρος του Οργανισμού Νεολαίας κ. Κλεάνθης Κουτσόφτας ανέφερε ότι το υπό αναφορά έργο και η σημαντική αυτή βράβευση αποτελούν απτό παράδειγμα του πως η τεχνολογία μπορεί να αξιοποιηθεί σε συνεργασία με άλλους επιστημονικούς κλάδους, για να προσφέρει καινοτόμες λύσεις και εμπειρίες.
Ο Δήμαρχος Λάρνακας κ. Ανδρέας Βύρας αφού συνεχάρη όλους τους εμπλεκόμενους και εξήρε το άριστο αποτέλεσμα, δήλωσε ότι μέσω τέτοιων συνεργειών μπορούμε δημιουργήσουμε σύγχρονα έργα όπως και αυτό, που να προσελκύσουν όχι μόνο τους τουρίστες αλλά τους ντόπιους στους αρχαιολογικούς μας χώρους.
Η Πρόεδρος της Διεθνούς Συνομοσπονδίας Phoenicians’ Route κα. Έλενα Τάνου δήλωσε περήφανη για τη συνεργασία που ανέπτυξαν η ΕΤΑΠ Λάρνακας και ο ΟΝΕΚ και που κατέκτησαν το συγκεκριμένο μοναδικό βραβείο το οποίο εντάσσει την Κύπρο στον δρόμο των Φοινίκων.
Ειδική μνεία κατά τη σεμνή τελετή έγινε στους συνεργάτες Σαμπίν Φουριέρ, Ανδρέα Λόρδο και Οδυσσέα Κοντοβούρκη οι οποίοι αφιλοκερδώς προσέφεραν τις συμβουλευτικές τους υπηρεσίες, στους Δημήτρη Κτωρίδη και Αναστασία Κακκούρη για τη μεγάλη τους συνεισφορά, καθώς επίσης και στον κ. Πήτερ Αστζιάν ο οποίος υπήρξε ανάμεσα στους εμπνευστές του έργου. Θερμές ευχαριστίες δόθηκαν στο Υφυπουργείο Τουρισμού και στον Δήμο Λάρνακας για τη συνεχή στήριξη, στο ΕΒΕΛ όπως επίσης και στο Τμήμα Αρχαιοτήτων για την πολύτιμη καθοδήγηση.
