Salutations de Port-Pont-Aven

Anne-Marie and Pascal Nicolaides at the picturesque and historical port town of Port-Pont-Aven, in the Brittany region in Northwestern France. For several hundred years Pont-Aven was a quiet port town with an industry based around its watermills and port, then towards the end of the 19th century it also gained a reputation as an art town. A significant number of artists are still attracted here, with the town referred to by the local tourist authorities as a ‘city of artists’.

Pont-Aven is mainly known because of the group of artists who flocked round Émile Bernard and Paul Gauguin, and who were joined in 1888 by Paul Sérusier. They were collectively known as “Pont-Aven School” (French: École de Pont-Aven, Breton: Skol Pont-Aven).

This little town, nestled in the lush Aven estuary, owes its fame to the school of painters who had Gauguin as their master. As you stroll along the ria, going over the footbridges, it’s easy to imagine why the artists were fascinated by the poetry of the landscapes and the luminosity of the little port.
