On 29.10.2023 journalists, gathered in “the nicest little place in the world”, to celebrate with the locals the 2023 award to Sunf-Rastoke. That flattering title of “Best Tourism Village by UN Tourism” was awarded on 19/10/2023. World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) committee ranked Slunj-Rastoka as the high 54th place among the 260 selected. Today, a year later, the media were called to find out which projects were launched and what was achieved to make them that title “title” and they maintained… The criterion of these results is “well-being of the population, new employment, retention of young people who need to recognize their future”!Mayor Mirjana Puškarić spoke about new projects, and journalists were informed about the Croatian Sports Museum. Like a media one “treat” announced were recorded sayings under the title: “Rastocani o Rastoki” translated into stories!Slunj and Rastoke, two interconnected areas in Croatia. Slunj is a small town known for its historical charm and natural beauty.
Rastoke is a picturesque village near Slunj, famous for its waterfalls, old mills, and the unique way its houses are built around the water channels. Often called the “Small Plitvice”, Rastoke has a similar look to Plitvice Lakes, but on a smaller scale, with scenic water features and lush surroundings. Visitors to Rastoke enjoy walking along wooden bridges, exploring the cascading rivers and waterfalls, and admiring the mix of natural and cultural heritage. It’s a popular stop for travellers heading to Plitvice Lakes National Park, located just a short drive away.A watermill village situated where the blue-green waters of river Slunjcica flows into the Korana river. Most of the houses were built at the end of the 19th and the beginning o-f the 20th century. Because of its extraordinary natural beauties and historical tradition, in 1962 Rastoke village fell under the protection of the State Directorate for cultural and historical heritage.
Slunj, Croatia got high marks for keeping traditions like local songs and dances alive while also putting in eco-friendly walking trails and other travel infrastructure.
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recogonizes villages that are leading in nurturing rural areas and preserving landscapes, cultural diversity, local values, and culinary traditions.
